Being Canceled

In 2017 I was ‘canceled’ when I ran a post-2016 campaign for local office. A few days before the election, a local university paper ran a story about an incident I was involved in in 2010; I chose to withdraw from the race and do my best to support that story and the people telling it.

In 2024, that story is still what you see when you google my name. I am 100% comfortable talking openly and honestly about the topic. My life’s work is about creating a just, equitable, world that is safe and vibrant for all of us. Talking about this is part of how we grow, are accountable to ourselves and communities, and become the best versions of ourselves.

If you’re curious about what happened, reach out to chat. I share this story whenever I’ve started a new relationship, when I meet new friends, and with new employers and clients. It’s part of my relational approach to tough conversations.

I know it’s tempting, especially after reading this, to google my name and click that story. Pervasive as our online lives are, they show a small piece of who we are. If you truly feel you need to read it, you can access it here, where it won’t continue to reinforce google’s search algorithm in perpetuity.

I appreciate the time you took to read this, and hope our paths cross in the good work to make the world more just, equitable, safe, and kind.
